Isidoro (shown here) and Matteo Bacchiocca are a father-son art restorer duo who, since 2017, have been returning the statues in Urbino's 17th century Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola to their original state.

The 400-year-old Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola is home to the Confraternita del Corpus Domini.

The Bacchioccas make test restorations before beginning work, and mark the differences in color between the original (3) and and additional layers of paint (2 and 1).

This statue of San Filippo Neri is the last of six to be restored by the Bacchioccas. After that, they plan to restore the balcony and frescoes in the church.

Matteo Bacchiocca uses a scalpel to remove paint, which is sometimes five to six layers thick, from decoration at the top of a statue.

The longest part of the restoration process is "descialbo"--scraping off the paint--which can take up to three months per statue.

The church archives include materials dating back to the 1200s, and contain scrolls and books that document the history of the confraternity.

In 2017, Giuseppe Cucco, the head or prior of the brotherhood, published a book about his confraternity's history, which led to the restoration of the statues.

June 1 is the feast of San Crescentino, Urbino's patron saint. His statue is carried out of the cathedral and paraded through the city to bless the citizens.

Various religious organizations and brotherhoods participate in the procession annually, including the Confraternita del Corpus Domini.

At night, pedestrians can step up to the glass pane and see the artwork and frescoes of the Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola, as well as the scaffolding hiding the last statue to be restored.
